In a viral video posted by Kevin Bumstead on Youtube, two teenagers try to crack the mysterious code of the elusive and ancient rotary phone.

For the uninitiated and the young, rotary phones are what older people used to use before the emergence of smartphones or even wireless phones.

Attached to a landline, the phones’ included a rotary dial that centered around the revolutionary engineering and technological feat of pulse dial.

The first iteration of the phone was introduced in 1904 and gained in popularity during the first half of the 20th century only to be supplanted by push dialing.

In short, the phones are really old, yet there is a good chance one of your grandparents may still have one laying around their home in the attic. As seen in the video, using rotary phones were tedious and sometimes completely unreliable.

For the smart-phone raised teenagers in the video, it is probably inconceivable that people used to have to use phones like this.

Someone should give some teenagers a floppy disk and let them try to figure out how to use it and what it can be used for to create another viral hit.
